Boron Trifluoride (BF₃): Three Key Questions for Semiconductor & Chemical Buyers
Time : 17/03/2026

What exactly is boron trifluoride, and why do purity grades matter?

Boron trifluoride (BF₃) is a colorless, toxic gas with a suffocating odor. It smokes when it hits moist air and is highly reactive—it's a Lewis acid that forms adducts with many organic compounds.

The purity grade determines the application:

  • 99.9% BF₃: Used as a catalyst in organic synthesis, alkylation, polymerization, and petroleum refining. Also used in B-10 isotope production for nuclear applications.

  • 99.999% (5N) BF₃: Electronic-grade. Essential for semiconductor manufacturing as a p-type dopant in ion implantation and diffusion processes for silicon wafers. Critical for 7nm/5nm chip fabrication.

The difference matters. At 99.999%, impurities like CO₂, N₂, O₂, and SO₂ are held below 10 ppm each.

What are the export and packaging requirements for BF₃?

UN Classification: BF₃ is shipped as UN1008 (or classified under toxic gas regulations). It's hazardous—toxic, corrosive, and reacts with moisture.

Packaging:

  • Standard cylinders: 47L steel cylinders, typically filled 25KGS.

  • Valve connection: CGA330 or DISS (depending on destination).

  • Bulk: ISO tanks for larger volumes.

Transport rules:

  • Critical: Never ship with oxygen cylinders—joint transport is prohibited.

  • Cylinders must be secured horizontally (with spacers) or vertically with anti-tip protection.

  • Transport by sea, rail, or truck requires DG declarations and proper labeling.

Documentation: MSDS (GHS-compliant), dangerous goods declaration, cylinder inspection certificates, and CIQ for exports from China. REACH registration required for EU.

Why source BF₃ from China, and what international standards do you meet?

Chinese BF₃ production has advanced significantly. Domestic plants now produce 99.9% to 99.999% purity, matching BASF and other global suppliers—at competitive pricing.

Market reality: Global BF₃ market was $547 million in 2024 and is growing at 6.4% CAGR, driven by semiconductor demand. Asia-Pacific is the largest market.

Our BF₃ meets:

  • SEMI C3.54 (semiconductor process gas standards)

  • Electronic grade specs (≥99.99% to ≥99.999%)

  • REACH and TSCA compliance for EU/US markets

Advantage: Direct from manufacturer—no long import lead times (historically 3-6 months for BASF). We manage cylinder return logistics.
