1. As protective gas. (Noble gases are chemically inert.)
When welding precision parts or active metals such as magnesium and aluminum, argon is often used as protective gas to isolate the air and prevent the metal from reacting with other substances at high temperatures. Nuclear fuel cups for atomic reactors, which oxidize rapidly in air, also need to be machined under argon. The light bulb is filled with argon to reduce the vaporization and prevent the oxidation of tungsten wire, so as to extend the service life of the bulb.
2. As an electric light source. (Rare gas will emit different colors of light when energized)
The first neon light in the world was filled with neon gas (the original English meaning of neon is "neon"). Neon lights emit red light that penetrates the air so strongly that it can pass through thick fog. Therefore, neon lights are often used on the lights of airports, ports and waterway traffic lines. The tubes are filled with argon or helium, which glow blue or red when energized. In the lamp tube filled with different content of helium, neon, argon mixture of gas, you can make a colorful neon lamp. The fluorescent lamp commonly used in the door is made by filling a small amount of mercury and argon in the lamp tube and coating the inner wall with fluorescent substances (such as halogen calcium phosphate). When energized, the tube because of mercury vapor discharge and produce ultraviolet light, stimulate fluorescent material, make it emit visible light similar to sunlight, so called fluorescent lamp.
Neon, krypton and xenon can also be used in laser technology.
3. Medical treatment
Xenon gas has a high degree of ultraviolet radiation, which can be used in medical technology technology. Xenon can dissolve in the cytoplasm of the oil, causing the cell anesthesia and expansion, so that the nerve endings temporarily stop, to achieve anesthesia. A mixture of 80 per cent xenon and 20 per cent oxygen has been tried as a harmless anaesthetic. Isotopes of krypton and xenon are also used to measure cerebral blood flow, among other things.
4. As artificial air
Helium is mixed with oxygen to make artificial air for divers to breathe. Because in the high pressure of the deep sea, breathing with ordinary air, more nitrogen will be dissolved in the blood. When the diver rises from the deep sea and the body gradually returns to normal pressure, the nitrogen dissolved in the blood will be released to form bubbles, which will cause obstruction to the microvessels and cause "airplug disease". Helium, on the other hand, is much less soluble in the blood than nitrogen, so using a mixture of helium and oxygen (artificial air) instead of ordinary air will not cause the phenomenon.
5. Inflation
Helium is the lightest gas in addition to hydrogen, can not burn nor combustible, and hydrogen is flammable and explosive, and now helium has been used to replace hydrogen filling balloons, air boats.
6. Low temperature
Liquid helium has a boiling temperature of -269℃, which is the most difficult of all gases to liquarize. Liquid nitrogen can be used to obtain ultra-low temperature close to absolute zero (-273.15℃). Liquid helium with a temperature above 2.2K is a normal liquid and has the permeability of a general liquid. Liquid nitrogen at temperatures below 2.2K is superfluid and has many anomalous properties. For example, it has superconductivity and low viscosity. Its viscosity changes to one percent of the viscosity of hydrogen, and this liquid helium can flow up the inner wall of the container and trickle down the outer wall of the container. This phenomenon is of great significance for the study and verification of quantum theory.
