What is n-butane?
N-butane is a colorless gas with a slightly unpleasant odor that is insoluble in water but readily soluble in alcohol and chloroform. It is a flammable and explosive substance that is widely used in several fields, including as a solvent, refrigerant, and as a raw material for organic synthesis. N-butane mainly exists in oilfield gas, wet natural gas and cracking gas, and is extracted by separation process.
R-600 refrigerant, also known as n-butane (chemical formula C₄H₁₀), is a hydrocarbon refrigerant known as n-butane in English and under the trade name Reflube 600. R-600 refrigerant has no damage to the ozone layer and has a very low greenhouse effect, making it one of the most environmentally friendly refrigerants at present. From the point of view of environmental protection, most countries in the world allow its use in the initial installation of new refrigeration equipment and after-sales maintenance.
What is the preparation method of n-butane?
1 Separation from oil field gas and wet natural gas: The oil field gas and wet natural gas are separated by pressurized condensation to obtain LPG containing propane and butane, which is further separated by distillation to finally extract n-butane.
2. Separation from the cracked C₄ fraction: The refinery can produce a large amount of C₄ fraction through the processes of atmospheric and reduced pressure distillation, reforming, catalytic cracking, coking, thermal cracking, and hydrocracking. Butane was also contained in the C₄ fraction of the by-product of the ethylene unit. N-butane can be extracted from the C₄ fraction by a series of separation and purification processes including acetonitrile extraction distillation.
What is the use of n-butane?
N-butane can not only be used as a fuel directly, but also as a multi-purpose chemical raw material. It can be used as a solvent for subcritical biotechnology extraction, refrigerant, and raw material for organic synthesis. Butane can be dehydrogenated to butadiene or butadiene under the action of catalyst. In the presence of sulfuric acid or anhydrous hydrofluoric acid, butane can be isomerized to isobutane, and isobutane can be further catalyzed dehydrogenation to isobutene. In addition, isobutane can also be used as alkylation agent to react with olefins to form branched hydrocarbons with excellent anti-explosion properties.
N-butane can also produce maleic anhydride, acetic acid and acetaldehyde by catalytic oxidation; Halogenated butane is prepared by halogenation reaction; Nitrobutane is prepared by nitration reaction; Carbon disulfide was prepared under high temperature catalytic conditions. Hydrogen is produced by water vapor conversion. In addition, it can be used as an admixture in motor fuels to control volatile components, as a deasphalting agent in heavy oil refining, as a wax precipitator in oil Wells, and as a flow agent for secondary oil recovery. N-butane can also be used as resin foaming agent, seawater desalination refrigerant, and solvent for olefin polymerization, etc.
N-butane, when mixed with propane, can be used as liquefied petroleum gas, which is widely used in home heating, cooking and industrial heating. In addition, it is also used as a large number of organic synthesis raw materials, such as through dehydrogenation to produce butadiene and butadiene, through isomerization to produce isobutane, through catalytic oxidation to produce maleic anhydride, acetic acid and acetaldehyde, through halogenation to produce halobutane, through nitrification to produce nitrobutane, through high temperature catalysis to produce carbon disulfide, through water vapor conversion to produce hydrogen. N-butane is also used in organic synthesis and ethylene manufacturing, as a raw material for synthetic rubber and high-octane liquid fuels, as well as as a writer's fuel, solvent, refrigerant, and instrument calibration.
