The refined hydrogen chloride gas has a wide range of uses because of little impurity (especially organic matter). The following is a brief description of its utilization.
● Production of hydrochloric acid
The refined HCl gas (in a packed column or membrane absorption column) can be absorbed with water to produce industrial grade hydrochloric acid, which is the method used by most enterprises. The by-product of refined hydrogen chloride gas can be used to produce high purity HCl gas by absorption - desorption - condensation - filtration - adsorption process. This high purity hydrogen chloride gas is used as follows:
● PVC production
High purity HCl gas can be used to synthesize vinyl chloride with ethylene, and can also be used to produce chlorinated hydrocarbons by catalytic oxychlorination reaction with hydrocarbon, air (or oxygen). The most important oxychlorination reaction in industry is the production of dichloroethane. The resulting dichloroethane is cracked to produce vinyl chloride and by-product HCl gas, which can be recycled.
● NH 4 Cl production
Ammonia and HCl can be directly synthesized to produce NH 4 Cl, or phosphorus chloride can be produced as an intermediate of 4-hydroxymethyl phosphorus chloride.
● Metal chloride production
At a temperature of 700 ℃ and in the presence of phosgene and NiCl 2, silicon tetrachloride can be prepared by the reaction of carbon silicon and hydrogen chloride. Mo, Nb, Ta, Ti, Zr, Hf, Cr, W and other metal chlorides can also be prepared by the reaction of corresponding metal nitride and hydrogen chloride.
● Chlorinated hydrocarbon production
Hydrogen chloride and olefins, alkanes compounds can be added to produce chlorocarbons. For example, at 35 ~ 40 ℃, hydrogen chloride and ethane react in liquid phase to produce chloroethane. The industrial production of 1, 1-dichloroethane and 1,1, 1-trichloroethane is produced using chloroethane and hydrogen chloride as raw materials.
● Organic synthesis
In the synthesis of organic matter, hydrogen chloride can be used directly as a chlorinating agent, such as various alkyl chlorides can be prepared by chlorinating the corresponding alcohol with hydrogen chloride.
● Other applications
HCl-H 2 mixture can be used for heavy oil desulfurization. High temperature dissociation of HCl has been applied to chemical plasma reactions, through which various C 1, C 2 chlorocarbons and chlorocarbons can be synthesized from carbon and hydrogen chloride.
By changing the conditions, 1, 1, 2-trichloroethane, 1, 2-dichloroethane, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene can become the main products.
