Chloromethane (CH₃Cl) is an organic halide, existing as a colorless, flammable gas with a faint ether-like sweet odor at room temperature and pressure. A simple halocarbon found both in nature (oceans, fungi, etc.) and industry (via the reaction of methanol and hydrogen chloride), it is primarily used as a key raw material for producing organosilicon polymers and methylcellulose, and was once employed as a refrigerant and anesthetic.
